Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Vice President of Corporate Finance, the Vice President of Accounting will play a crucial role in managing financial operations, ensuring compliance, and directing the accounting activities of the company. The VP of Accounting will lead a team responsible for all aspects of accounting and financial reporting, contributing directly to the success and sustainability of the company. The ideal candidate is someone who inspires the accounting team, but can also embrace ambiguity, loves solving problems and getting their hands dirty. The candidate will possess strong management and team leadership competencies. This individual must be a senior leader who is a change agent and driver of innovation, willing to challenge the status quo from both an operational and team perspective. You will play a critical role in ensuring we continue building a world-class accounting function. Working closely with team members across the organization you'll provide technical accounting guidance that impacts the framework of controls for the entire company, helping us streamline processes and software solutions, so that we can spend less time tabulating the data and spend more time connecting the data dots for real-time decision making.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversight for all aspects of accounting within the company including financial statement preparation, tax compliance, audit planning, and internal controls.
  • Lead, support, and develop the accounting team while driving efficiency & automation to keep up with the demands of our diverse business.
  • Owns the GL and recording of all business transactions, including detailed analysis and reconciliation of all general ledger accounts, while ensuring compliance with local accounting requirements and internal policies.
  • Accurate and timely completion and issuance of company and project financial statements.
  • Act as a liaison to external auditing and tax firms, while owning primary responsibility for the Company's views on technical accounting matters.
  • Responsible for evaluating the performance of direct and indirect report personnel in the Accounting Department.
  • Recommend proper accounting treatment for mergers and acquisitions, project financings, etc. and partner with other teams to lead accounting diligence activities for any such transactions.
  • Manage Treasury and ensure bank reconciliations are completed timely.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal customers, management, and external customers.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve accounting processes, systems, and controls to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Computer literate with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, with strength in Excel. Working knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics SLpreferable.
  • Ability to organize and work efficiently in a dynamic fast-paced environment.
  • Strong decision-making skills including the ability to extrapolate from written procedures and policies.
  • Must have a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
Qualifications

To succeed as VP, Accounting at Apex Clean Energy, you'll need to excel within the following criteria:

  • BA in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration; MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller or Director of Accounting, with both public/private global company in leadership roles.
  • Understanding of renewable energy project finance, accounting principles, and regulatory frameworks preferred.
  • Proven track record of effectively leading and developing high-performing teams in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate financial concepts to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong ERP utilization and implementation.
  • Active CPA required.
  • Key technical requirements include advanced Microsoft Office skills.
  • Location: Willing and able to work from our Headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia

Work Environment:

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.
